Ep 13 "Oh the banners!": of sigils and heraldry

In this episode, your hosts take you on a journey to medieval and not so medieval Europe to explore the rich world of heraldry to compare it to its Westeros counterpart: sigils.

Who gets to have a coat of arms? How to pick your doodle? What are the rules? Are imaginary coat of arms a new thing?

We discovered so much we didn't know about, it was an actual delight to learn so much -and hopefully you enjoy learning with us. It's not just pretty images, but it is *also* pretty images. And identity.

Yes! Even your states have them! George just didn’t want to bring us joy. That’s all. Obviously sad. 😩 I think you’re our most iconic ever listener? Beating even our Kazakh listener in dedication (they caught up in two separate occasions, whereas you binged through it!) (dear Kazakh listener: you’re still our most incredible listener to have!)

Honestly: you’re definitely right!

That’s right -but that’s all war stuff. Not fancy dinner stuff, and no tapestry either. Very sad!

Also also - there’s a few notable examples of people in Westeros using their sigils in their armor/clothes - The Hound’s hound helm, Victarion’s kraken helm, Robert had stag antlers on his helm, and Rhaegar’s black armor had a dragon of rubies on his breastplate

Also my new personal head canon is that Marge Mormont has the erection axe bear as her personal standard

We have “official seals” for county/states/et al in the states. And they are sometimes on the trash cans too. Also I’m caught up!
